Foyer Enclosure
This would be a permanent, concrete addition to my home and I was not yet a confirmed Koi hobbyist. My thinking therefore was to design with maximum flexibility. Without the Koi it would still be a nice water feature, supplying welcomed humidity to the house. The sound of water, priceless. This “water feature” consisted of a small pool [700 gals] with a water wall, behind which was an up flow filter chamber filled with lava rock. This filter had a bottom drain for maintenance. Both were done in one concrete pour called a monolithic pour and were enclosed by a sunroom unit. I drilled a two inch hole in the house foundation into the basement to accommodate a midlevel drain. I added a bottom drain in the pond which drained to daylight, also for maintenance but also for an overflow. In the basement I had my 1/8 hp pump and a pool sand filter which returned the water above the house foundation into the upper filter chamber. The year was 1988.
